Default PSP go

Yeah yeah, the Vita is out.
Whatever.

Last week, I bought a PSP go from a friend. Was $35.50 a good deal?
Yes, yes it was. I'm just wondering, should I hack it? What exactly are the benefits of doing so? Downfalls?

Not sure if the PSP Go is even hackable. Either way, no downfalls to hacking it, a huge list of benefits.

There's a way of doing it, yes. You just have to spend a couple seconds launching some sort of eboot file. Not totally familiar with the process though.

I glanced over a tutorial, and it seems easy enough.
So no voided warranty? No getting kicked out of online games without even using performance enhancing hacks?
Can I download Ratchet & Clank, which doesn't seem to be in PSN anymore...?
Will I lose what's on the device now?

1. No voided warranty as you can just update it back to normal.
2. No kicks on online games seeing as the PSP has no anti-cheat
3. You can download Ratchet and Clank, but it would be illegal to do so.
4. You shouldn't lose anything already on your memory card.

I would look closely at the online gaming thing. Many games require a psn login to play online and, last i knew, hacked psps cant go on the psn.

I don't know of a single PSP game that required a PSN login to play online. I don't even think one exists.

I can't test it right now, as my psp can't connect to this network, but if I remember correctly, it was only the newer releases, like resistance: retribution. But by all means correct me if i'm wrong

Of course, i could be thinking of firmware blocking games. for example, to play motorstorm (the snowy one), I had to upgrade from 5.00m33 to 6.6 PRO-b10, which I have now. I hated moving out of m33, but it had to be done...

So if I hack my PSP, I can't use PSN at all?
Which means I can't legally download games?
I see that as a downfall.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. It used to work back when I had my PSP with custom firmware but I think Sony did something to disable it on custom firmware. I think you can still download the games on the PC or PS3 and transfer them to the PSP.

I'll do more checking into that. Maybe make a thread on a PSP forum, I guess.

Now back to Ratchet & Clank... If I buy a UMD of it at Game Stop, should I be able to download the ISO or whatever for it with a clear conscience?
I know I've heard that if you own, say, a Pokémon Silver cartridge, you can legally download the Pokémon Silver ROM. I see this as a similar situation.

That's still illegal. Downloading ROMs that you own is also illegal, even though there are a lot of misinformed people on the internet who claim it is legal.

It is illegal, but it can be defended as ethical, as that is a personal choice, not an objective matter of law. He said "with a clear conscience," which is again an ethical decision, not a legal one. Legally he has to make the copy of the original hardware himself, but you will find very few people ethically opposed to the re-downloading of content they already purchased legally. It's not like portable formats often have commercially available methods to make your own copies like a standard DVD from a console would have. Even Wii discs can be read with ordinary DVD readers if you use one with firmware that is moddable to reverse the spin direction. UMD's and cartridges are much, much harder to find ways to legally make your own backups.
