First avatar that isn't just a cutout Although I used the same gradients over it so they'd match up. Text is kind of crappy, but I couldn't get it to show up well D:
imo, 400x150 always looks the best, anything else just looks odd As for font ... idk.

I went with this size because it suited the render better. I didn't want too much open space to the sides and I also didn't want to have the top coming down on his head cutting out parts of the render.
For font maybe Celtic deathcaps? Depends on what you want to write. Size is a bit awkward for a siggeh but that isna that big a deal. Really good for a first time
Nice attempt. Keep it up and keep doing tutorials, that basically how I taught myself to do stuff. I tend to do web stuff usually but had enough a few days ago, so I made this instead. It's not perfect or anything but it was fun to do and made a change from drawing/ building websites.
The lighting is a bit too bright, but not bad. It is also a bit too sharp in a few places and the render isn't really blended in. Not bad at all though.
I'll work on blending at some point. Need to find some other tutorials to teach me better techniques so I can eventually work my own style. Probably fiddle with C4D's next
Also avatar to go with it:
It's 100X100 because I'm using it on a different forum.
May sound funny, but what program do most of you use for this sort of thing? Photoshop? My school art teacher had photoshop cs4 and she let me borrow it to install on my PC.
By the way, i really like that sig. However, maybe try a different pic for the avatar rather than just cropping from the sig?
Yeah, Photoshop is definitely the best photo editing software to use, I'm using CS5 extended and won't use anything else. There are a bunch of free editing programs you can get, most don't have the same functionality as PS though.
I should have mentioned, check out deviantart.com and look in the tutorials section, there's a bunch of stuff in there too.

Yeah, I used Photoshop. I've used CS3 through CS5 and the only thing that I've noticed that has changed is the look. I'm not a super PS person so I haven't noticed the things they've added in. And I wanted a matching set for the forum I'm using them on so that's how I did it I might do something else some other time, but I haven't worked with small images like that.
I always change things up when I go through tutorials. It was telling me to just move the clipping mask around, but that just made it look all square and bad. So I made it really big Just need to find a way to put the text on the sword without making it unreadable.
I also think I may have done a better job blending it this time, but that's just me It told me to make it black and white, but instead I made a gradient map and set it to screen to bring out some color in it.
Again, there are some areas where it is too sharp. When you use sharpen and it is too sharp just go to edit > fade sharpen and you can change how much it sharpens the image. Either that or use a low opacity eraser to erase the parts that look too sharp.
