It's been quiet on the Zune News front for a while now, but we have a tasty tidbit for you. Looks like we're due for a new version of the Zune software with the Windows Phone 7 launch. At least according to Matt Akers, co-host of Zune Insider.
Obviously, this update will allow Windows Phone 7 devices to sync with the Zune software, but one can only speculate as to what else Microsoft will have up their sleeve. Bugfixes? A UI update? And might they announce something else? Perhaps the ever-elusive Zune HD 2? A video subscription service? (And again, these are only speculations.)
Of course, there is the possibility that a Windows Phone 7 compatibility update will be it, though. It does appear that Microsoft is migrating Zune away from it's DAP roots and thus this update could reflect that.
I suppose, like always, we'll just have to wait and see...
I have very high doubts that the zHD2 will ever exist. You never saw an iTouch 2. Just slightly newer versions, and Firmware updates. If anything, that might be all.
yea the HD has like the newest hardware already, all that could be added would be slighlty better hardware like screen maby something stupid like a camara or some crap
Incredible that there are still people thinking that MS is making a Zune HD 2.
Some people already said, the Zune HD is top notch hardware, no need for update.
Infact, what people and the media thought the Zune HD 2 will be, was when MS announced their Porject Pink!. It all got interpreted wrong, there is no Zune HD 2, everything the media interpreted as such was the Kin, which itself was a bloody failure.
Yeah, I agree, there is NOT going to be a ZHD2, not even ZHD 2nd gen. That's what Apple does, and that's just coming out with a new one with one less thing that doesn't work. The ZHD doesn't really have anything wrong with it... stuff could be improved, but mostly through firmware updates.
the only thing i could see them doing with the Zune HD is giving it a slightly bigger screen, and more RAM to be compatible with WP7, maybe even a completely revamped browser and even social needs a revamp. a camera would be stupid, worst idea to put a camera on anything besides phones and computers. but i also remember them saying there will be 1 more hardware refresh in the Zune series, my guess is next year. why next year? well this year is too late, with WP7 launching soon, we would have to wait a little bit, also the handheld competition, wait after the 3DS is released to announce something. then you guys remember, the iPhone came first, then came the iTouch, this leads me to believe ZHD was a prototype for the one to be released after WP7.

anyone saying the zune HD is top notch hardware, better look at competing devices. the touch 4th gen is going to have the "retina" display, front and rear cameras, and the A4 processor (1ghz)
the samsung galaxy will have a 4" super AMOLED 480x800 screen, 1ghz processor, and a camera. wether you want to believe it or not, a camera is important to people looking to buy these devices (not to me but many others i am sure)
while the HD is a more than capable media player it is going to suffer the same fate unless they give it the specs of the WP7 phones. 720P and HD radio are not going to be enough to pull people away from these other devices. it NEEDS a 1ghz processor, camera, high resolution screen, and it needs to be open to the WP7 marketplace to do anything for the company IMO. zune is on it last leg as a PMP, however it is still going strong as a software and add on firmware.
thats just my theory, i really dont knwo what is going to happen...if it will ever come or not. maybe these hundreds of HD's the dave is puttin together actually have a 3.5" screen and the tegra 2 inside....who knows.

Ok, have to agree, that Zune HD is not top notch hardware, but it is definitely not old.

IMO the Zune doesn't need a camera.
Anyone who wants a camera, get a phone.
Anyone who wants a camera to actually make pictures you can print out/view on your TV, get a real camera.
Have to agree on the WP7 marketplace integration. However it won't happen with this Zune. Not only did it get hacked, but also would it require updating Xna 3.1 to 4.0.
If there will be marketplace integration, it will be done with a new Zune gen, which fully supports Xna 4.0/Silverlight 3.
However, I doubt it. The WP7 has the Zune integrated into it. You literally have the Zune software (firmware) as an app (if you want) on the WP7.
Microsoft is known for throwing away great brands, just look at what it did with Danger OS, completely killing the HipTop brand (T-Mobile SideKick phone series) in hopes of reinventing it as the KIN which only lasted 48 days and the KIN had a "Zune HD side". I'm excited for WP7 personally but not at the cost of just dropping the Zune HD like they did with the 'classic' Zune, SideKick, and KIN brands and thats just in the last few years in the mobile market alone. Microsoft seems to be almost completely fearless when it comes to just walking away from products like a deadbeat dad, but hey thats just me and I truly don't know all and far from a future reader or fortune teller, only time will tell and as an old school Zuner I hope in our favor!
WP7 promises big things but are we along for the ride?

Danger+sidekick sucked.
KIN would have lasted if MS didn't **** up with verizon.
Killing the classic zunes was completely justified.

the wp7 hardware specs are more advanced...
and they do require a camera.
It's at least a theoretical possibility that an HD successor is a WP7 phone stripped of the phone. iTouch was done that way as well.
