Default Help - cannot install latest Zune software

I just got my wife a Zune 8GB player for XMas and I cannot install the Zune software. I have already done everything from the standard MS Zune help link (which I cannot post because I haven't make 5 or more posts). I am running Windowx XP SP3 and I've updated everything I know. I now have Window media player 11, etc.

Specifically, I am getting this message: "Can't find the media or installation package 'Zune'." Error cde: 0x80070002.

I've downloaded ZunePackage31.exe, which is what the above link says to do, but it doesn't work.

What makes this particularly embrassing is that I tried to convince my daughter to switch from an iPod to a Zune and she absolutely refused, and now she's laughing at me for gettting a Zune.

I am used to the "Microsoft" experience and have had to deal with numerous Windows problems over the years, but I never had an experience this BAD particularly on Christmas day. And I actually own stock in MS, and to put up with this kind of crap.

Does anyone know how to really fix this problem? I believe that the Zune installer is simply having trouble finding the Zune-x86.msi but I might be wrong. I also tried manually installing x86\packages but I wasn't successful doing that.

I am also a software developer and this kind of problem arises from the fact that MS has too much different software which all has strange and undocumented dependencies on other pieces of software in the OS. That's why Zune is not installing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get this work by tomorrow, I am taking this Zune back & getting an iPod. Thanks.

Mike

Not to sound rude, but is your XP SP3 legit?
If so, use this program.
Remove-it.org > Tools > UnZoone
It will remove any and all remnants of your Zune software.
Then download the Zune software from here.
Zune.net | Download Zune software
Honestly, that should work for you.

Just to check, when you run ZunePackage31.exe it extracts files to a selected place. Once it's done you have to run startzune.exe for it to work.
Ok... have you met all the requirements for installing Zune? (Zune.net | System Requirements for the Zune Software)

Hi,

Thanks for the information.

>Not to sound rude, but is your XP SP3 legit?
Yes - my XP Pro is legit. In fact, I had to run a MS verification at least once during this fiasco. Also, I don't think Windows Update would work if my OS wasn't legit.

>It will remove any and all remnants of your Zune software.
I've never installed Zune before on this computer, so what remnants would it remove?

>Then download the Zune software from here.
I did install the zunesetuppkg-x86.exe from zune.net. That's when my problems started.

>Just to check, when you run ZunePackage31.exe it extracts files to a >selected place. Once it's done you have to run startzune.exe for it to work.
Yes - I did that. That's what the MS pages tells you to do.

I believe that my computer has all the Zune requirements although I am not sure what version of DirectX I have. Does anyone know how to do that?

The error message I'm getting is very specific - it cannot find the 'Zune' installation package. It's obvious that I am not the only person who's had this problem, as MS has a very detailed site (of which nothing helps) for people experiencing this & other problems.

As an update - I was able to install the Zune software on an older computer with MS XP Home on it; however, I would still like to get this fixed.

Thanks.

Mike
